Leicester took a huge step towards the Premier League title against Sunderland on Super Sunday. From front to back, the 2-0 victory bore all the hallmarks of their extraordinary season. Any lingering doubts about whether Leicester could go the distance were blown away at the Stadium of Light. An emotional Claudio Ranieri left the pitch to chants of were going to win the league from the buoyant travelling fans, and it is now difficult to imagine any other outcome. How fitting that such a significant victory should arrive in this style. Leicester showed the patience and organisation that has typified their recent run of narrow victories for just over an hour in the north east, and when the hosts began pushing forward for a winning goal, the Foxes simply picked them off on the break. Jamie Vardys goals were classic Leicester. His opener - which made him the clubs first player since Gary Lineker to score 20 goals in a top flight season - came after Danny Drinkwater received a Robert Huth header deep in his own half with his back to goal. Jamie Vardy finishes Leicesters opening goal against Sunderland It looked like an innocuous position, but the midfielder turned Lee Cattermole with two quick touches and immediately sighted Vardy, who had taken up his usual position in the outside-left channel. Suddenly, Sunderland were vulnerable. Drinkwaters pass was perfect, and Younes Kaboul couldnt get close as Vardy angled his run inside and finished clinically with his right foot.Simple but devastatingly effective counter-attacking. It was Leicester all over, and Vardys second left Sunderland with a feeling of deja-vu. This time it was substitute Demarai Gray who made it, plucking Daniel Amarteys clearance out of the sky and sliding the ball forward, where Vardy had only one thing on his mind. Claudio Ranieri speaks to Sky Sports after Leicesters latest victory The 29-year-old outmuscled and outpaced Patrick van Aanholt to break free on goal, and he kept a cool head to round Vito Mannone and finish into Sunderlands empty net. You leave space in behind and they will kill you for it, said Jamie Carragher in the Sky Sports studio. These were the kind of goals Leicester have been scoring all season.Leicester are brilliant at what they do, added Carragher. Early on in the game Sunderland couldnt get out of their own half because they defended so deep to counteract Vardys pace, but as soon as you step up that pitch youre just asking for trouble.Vardy wasnt the only Leicester player to fulfil his duties to perfection. In midfield, they were boosted by another exceptional performance from NGolo Kante. The Frenchman was the smallest player on the pitch at just over 5ft 6ins, but he dominated the centre of the park in towering style. NGolo Kante was in fine form for Leicester against Sunderland Just days after Ranieri commented that the midfielder plays like he has a pack full of batteries hidden in his shorts, Kante delivered a typically industrious display, covering more ground (11.86km) and making more high-intensity sprints (71) than anyone else on the pitch.Kante was everywhere, popping up on the flanks, contributing in attack and defence and driving Leicester on as he has done all year. The 25-year-old ranked first for tackles (seven) and interceptions (four) at the Stadium of Light, and he also posted the second-highest passing accuracy of players to have started the game with 85.7 per cent. Kasper Schmeichel and Jamie Vardy celebrate after the final whistle He provided a perfect shield for a back five whose collective understanding is strengthening with every passing week. Leicesters defensive organisation has become more and more prominent in the second half of the campaign, and with the exception of Jack Rodwells gilt-edged chance in the closing stages, Sunderland were largely nullified.Kasper Schmeichel saved their only shot on target - a deflected effort from Fabio Borini in the first half - and Leicester held firm to keep their 13th clean sheet in the 23 games in which they have started with a back four of Danny Simpson, Huth, Wes Morgan and Christian Fuchs. Leicesters togetherness was epitomised by Marc Albrightons hard-working display on the left-hand side, and there were similarly tireless shifts from Shinji Okazaki and Riyad Mahrez. To a man, Leicester simply did exactly what was required. They are the most cohesive and effective unit in the Premier League, and with just five games of the season remaining, its starting to feel like a question of when and not if they finish the job. It is there on the table, said Ranieri, and now we have to take it. Also See: Vardy edges Leicester closer Ranieri: Everything in our hands Kevin Zeitler Jersey . Jose Bautista hit his second homer in exhibition play for the Blue Jays. Beltrans solo home run came in the third off reliever Todd Redmond and landed far over the right-field fence. It capped a four-run inning that included a two-run homer by Eduardo Nunez. Beltran signed a three-year, $45 million contract with the Yankees in the off-season. He batted .296 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs with the St. Louis Cardinals last year. "You want to see guys swinging the bat well, obviously, but its really important at the end," Yankees manager Joe Girardi said. "It doesnt really matter sometimes. You can be swinging the bat horrible at the end of spring training and get off to a hot start and vice versa. But its always nice to see." Bautista connected off Vidal Nuno in the first. Nuno struck out three and gave up two hits in two innings. Toronto starter Esmil Rogers tossed two innings and allowed an earned run. The right-hander gave up three hits and struck out one. Jose Reyes, Edwin Encarnacion, Melky Cabrera and Adam Lind each doubled for the Blue Jays. Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter did not play. STARTING TIME Blue Jays: Rogers threw 36 pitches and worked almost-exclusively on his changeup, which he said is progressing well. "Thats what I was working for," Rogers said. "Down in the Dominican (Republic) during winter ball, I worked on my changeup and now I feel more comfortable. I got it before. The only reason is I didnt have too much confidence to throw that. Right now, I can throw anything I want." Rogers was 5-9 with a 4.77 ERA in 44 games with the Blue Jays last season. He is a candidate for the fifth spot in the rotation. Yankees: Nuno said he felt as if he "got a little happy with the fastball," which led to Bautistas home run. Nuno, who is a contender for the fifth spot in the rotation, appeared in five games with the Yankees last season and made three starts. He finished 1-2 with a 2.25 ERA. "Overall, Im just pleased a little bit with how the outcome came," he said. "It was just one pitch and Bautista just hit it out.dddddddddddd Location was good and everything. (My fastball) just got overused a little bit and I wasnt using my secondary (pitches) like I was supposed to do." TRAINERS ROOM Blue Jays: Colby Rasmus was scratched from Sundays lineup because of a stiff neck. Rasmus was set to bat seventh, but opted to sit as a precaution. He does not expect it to be a long-term issue and hopes to return in a "couple days." "I feel all right, I just woke up on the wrong side of the bed this morning," Rasmus said. Anthony Gose took Rasmus place in centre field and was 0 for 3 with a strikeout. Manager John Gibbons said closer Casey Janssen had an MRI on his sore right shoulder, but it did not show any damage. "Its just inflamed," Gibbons said. "Theres a lot of wear and tear on a guy over the years. Hes smart, backed off and well give him a little breather. Theres still a full month (of spring training) left. Hell be ready to go." Janssen, who saved 34 games for the Blue Jays last season, said he plans to rest and start throwing again in a few days. Yankees: Girardi said first baseman Mark Teixeira, limited to 15 games last season because of a right wrist injury, might play in his first spring training game on Thursday or Friday. Alfonso Soriano, recovering from flu-like symptoms, went through a workout Sunday morning that included batting practice and defensive drills. The outfielder/designated hitter could play in his first exhibition game in the next few days. FIRE DRILL The Yankees dealt with a minor scare before the game when a towel inside of a dryer caught fire in the grounds crew clubhouse located next door to the teams clubhouse. Girardi joked that "it got a little smoky" and said some players evacuated. There was no reported damage or injuries. PINEDA PITCHES Yankees fifth starter candidate Michael Pineda, who missed the past two seasons after right shoulder surgery, threw 21 of 35 pitches for strikes in a simulated game. He faced 10 batters, allowing two hits, striking out one and walking his final two hitters. Pineda and Hiroki Kuroda are scheduled to pitch in Fridays game against the Tigers in Tampa.
